Title: Building Chinese Reading and Writing
Proficiency: Examples from Immersion
Description: Participants will learn how assessments of
Chinese proficiency for elementary age students can be
used in daily instruction for all ages. Participants
will see examples of assessment activities that
integrate academic content and language functions.
Through student-to-student interaction and
teacher-to-student interaction, assessments help
teachers to create a highly engaging classroom that
builds overall Chinese proficiency.

Title: Intercultural Competence in the Early
Language Classroom
Description: In this session, we will discuss the
importance of intercultural competence in the early
language classroom and explore how language lessons can
be modified to help students develop intercultural
competence. We will share sample lessons, units, and
rubrics created for a research project feature in
NNELL’s Learning Languages journal.

Breakfast
The NNELL annual breakfast provides attendees
an opportunity to network with other early
language-learning professionals. Join us for
conversation on the latest in early language learning
from leading professionals in the field. Sponsored in
part by Santillana USA. Admission is by ticket
only. Location: Signature 2 (Rosen Centre Hotel),
Saturday, November 23, 7:30-9am.
The keynote speaker for this event is Jessica Haxhi.
Jessica Haxhi is currently the Supervisor of
World Languages for New Haven Public Schools in
Connecticut. Previously, she taught Japanese language in
grades PreK-12 for 22 years, the majority spent teaching
at a PreK-5 magnet school. She is the current
co-president of the American Association of Teachers of
Japanese and has served on the Board of Directors of the
Northeast Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
Jessica has taught world language methodology courses at
two Connecticut state universities and consults with
districts on curriculum and instruction both locally and
nationally. She received the Milken Family Foundation
National Educator Award in 2002 and the U.S.-Japan
Foundation's Elgin Heinz Outstanding Japanese Teacher
Award in 2008.

November 1st for your review. Members will receive a
link to the draft in the next eNNELL notes. We invite
you to review the draft and submit your comments by
November 15th to Nadine Jacobsen at:

We will also discuss the proposed changes on
Friday, November 22nd, 2013 during the NNELL Membership
Meeting which will be held in Salon 13 (Rosen
Centre Hotel) from 11:00am-12:00pm at the ACTFL
Conference in Orlando, FL. This meeting is open
to all members. We welcome your participation and look
forward to hearing from you.

One of our favorite aspects of attending the
ACTFL conference is meeting and reconnecting with
teachers from across the country. Join us at the
Rosen Centre Hotel Saturday Nov 23 at 7:00 PM for
networking. If you’d like to join us RSVP at
