NNELL Webinars
Thank you to those of you who attended NNELL’s second webinar by Nathan Lutz titled Learning by Doing: Language Learning in Summer Camps, After School Clubs. It was a success and is now available online along with our first webinar by Al Martino titled Literacy and FLES Connecting to the Common Core Learning Standards. Members can view both webinars on demand for free and non-members can view webinars for $35 each.

Engaging Students through Digital Storytelling

In today’s digital age, sharing stories with our global community is becoming more common as new technologies and apps make creating digital storybooks quick and easy. In this webinar we will discuss the advantages of using digital storytelling in the elementary foreign language classroom. We will also explore how to use the tools you already have available to create beautiful digital stories that fit seamlessly into your curriculum.

New Issue of Parent Connections to Early Language Learning
Now Available

The current issue, Preparing for a Trip Abroad with Children, of Parent Connections to Early Language Learning is now available to NNELL members.

Parent Connections to Early Language Learning is a newsletter for parents that provides information related to learning other languages both at home and in the classroom. It compiles information from a variety of publications related to early language learning and is a tool early language teachers may reproduce and send home in their students’ backpacks.

There are 2 issues of Parent Connections to Early Language Learning and 20 issues of Home & School Connections (same great newsletter, with a different look and title).

Past issues include:

  • Communicating in Languages Other than English
  • Language Learning as an Adult
  • Creating an Resource Library for Parents, Pt 1 and 2
  • Finding Time for Language Learning
  • "Critical Languages" in the United States

As the new membership year gets underway, remind other early language educators that NNELL wants to keep members connected to others interested in early language learning around the nation. Nominations for the
National Network for Early Language Learning Award
And the award goes to…! NNELL is seeking nominations for the NNELL award for Outstanding Support of Early Second Language Learning at the ACTFL conference in Orlando. At the ACTFL conference in Philadelphia, NNELL recognized Dr. John David Edwards for his support and advocacy for foreign languages. The NNELL Award for Outstanding Support of Early Second Language Learning will be given to an individual or individuals who have demonstrated outstanding support of early second language learning of languages other than English. Nominees may be actively involved in their efforts in a variety of ways including, but not limited to, the following: principal or other school administrator, district or state school superintendent, classroom teacher, parent, school board member, businessperson, civic leader, politician/elected representative. Nominees should be individuals whose primary job responsibilities are not related to the field of second language education. For more information please go to nnell.org/awards . Submissions should be postmarked no later than June 1, 2013.
