2012 Chinese Bridge Delegation: November 7-15, 2012

The College Board and Hanban (Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters) are pleased to announce the 2012 Chinese Bridge Delegation, a one-week education trip hosted by Hanban and designed to help education leaders start and expand Chinese language and culture programs and to facilitate ongoing China-related research and exchanges. The program includes school and university visits, cultural activities, and educational workshops. Delegates will experience China firsthand by spending time in Beijing and one other regional city. Language Testimony on the Hill: May 21, 2012
Thirteen witnesses testified about the need for foreign language speakers in the military and other parts of government, and the potential implications for national security. Several of the speakers mentioned the need to begin learning a language early. Paula Patrick, Past President of NNELL testified that “we now have ample research that proves what all other countries have known for a long time. We must start language learning at an early age when the brain is most receptive to language acquisition.” Dr. Dan Davidson, President of American Councils for International Education stated “I cannot emphasize enough the critical importance of developing a pipeline of young students who begin foreign language instruction at an early age.” To watch their statements, go to http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/306148-1
 
Online Methods in Elementary School World Language Instruction, Iowa State University July 11 – August 3, 2012
Planning, implementation, and assessment of standards-based, student-centered, and thematic instruction in the elementary classroom. The Nominations Committee is now accepting nominations for the offices of Vice President and Treasurer. (Send the name of the nominee, a resume, and two letters of recommendation to ppatrick@nnell.org). The committee will select two nominees per office for the ballot. Voting will take place in September.
 
The Awards Committee is now accepting nominations for the annual NNELL Award for Outstanding Support of Early Second Language Learning. The NNELL Award will be presented to an individual or individuals at the 2012 ACTFL Convention in Philadelphia. For more information visit the NNELL website.
